Robert Jackson

Still Life of Chaplain’s Office

The Religious Crisis of the 1960s.
Several volumes of Newman.
A group of priests stood on the steps
of a church, circling the bishop–

the class photo, I suppose. Renewing
Tradition. The robes, hung, and Foxe’s
Book of Martyrs. Cards on the Mantelpiece.
The close bells which break 15 minutes

from a life, or an hour on occasion,
for all that is steady in various effects.
Unnailed, or so I’d think, to the wall,
a poster for the York Mystery Plays:

Christ, stylised, in strange crucifixion.
